Maths Machines

Dear Students,

Here is your task for Personal Connections tonight. Please visit the site below to create patterns using function machines. These remind me of the pattern machines you have been making in class.

Escher, Pattern and Tessellation

We have been looking at the connection between maths and art. Check out this website we looked at in class and have a look at Escher's amazing patterns:

Here are some of our own patterns:

Pattern Discoveries

Dear Parents and Students,

Our maths lesson today began with a routine we use to show our 'big ideas'. It's called Headlines and it is a routine I learned in Amsterdam. Each student started with the sentence 'A pattern.....' and then completed this in their own words. Here are some examples:

A pattern is something that repeats.
A pattern repeats in a certain way.
A pattern is something that repeats itself. It also is something that helps you make predictions.
A pattern is something that follows a rule and repeats itself.

I used this activity to see what students had understood about patterns so far. We noticed that we all used the words 'pattern' and 'repeats' in our sentences. Some had written 'rule' and 'prediction'. We talked about predictions and one student made the interesting comment that we use our experiences to help make predictions.

From here we are moving to explore:

To describe a number pattern means to provide a precise rule that produces the pattern.

We saw that 'precise' was a key idea here, so we then moved onto discussing how to make our pattern rules more precise. Using a calculator we generated patterns, recorded the pattern and finally showed the precise rule using numbers and words.

Can you work out the rules for our patterns?

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60......
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35......
9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.........
6, 30, 150, 750, 3 750, 18 750........
